Allotment-holders: thrifty, resourceful ...

... and as fed up with the vuvuzela noise as the rest of us!

Excellent re-use of an unwanted object here, I thought. Stops anybody poking their eye out on the canes and makes a nice change from wellies planted with nasturtiums.

Here in Latvia they put empty pop bottles on the sticks, not only does it save your eyes but they rattle in the wind to scare the birds off.

Tanya - I can only assume you didn't watch the World Cup! A vuvuzela is a plastic horn that makes a noise like an enraged bee or bison! Put a few thousand together and it's headache inducing. They were being given away by some newspapers and I'm so glad to see somebody found a good use for one.

Ali, Jane - isn't it just great?

Joanna - we do the same with plastic bottles here.

I am green with envy at all this expertise. Intend to get going with my veggie patch soon, but in the meantime have harvested many, but scraggy, strawberries, and had to cut down a gooseberry bush devastated by mildew. Will it grow again?
